EMDR Therapy
Healing Beyond Words: EMDR Therapy in Asheville
Have you ever felt like you know you’re safe intellectually, but your body and emotions haven’t gotten the memo?
Sometimes, traditional talk therapy can only take us so far. When we experience trauma, chronic stress, or deeply painful life events, those memories can get "stuck" in the nervous system. Years later, a specific sound, conflict, or stressful day can trigger the exact same panic, anger, or feelings of unworthiness you felt back then.
If you are tired of managing symptoms and are ready to heal the root cause, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain naturally process traumatic or distressing memories.
When a traumatic event occurs, the brain’s information processing system can get overwhelmed, locking the memory in its original, raw form. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as side-to-side eye movements, gentle taps, or auditory tones) to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain. This mimics the natural processing that happens during REM sleep, allowing your brain to re-file those painful memories so they no longer carry an emotional charge.
The Goal of EMDR: It doesn’t erase your history or make you forget what happened. Instead, it removes the "emotional sting." You will remember the event as a fact of your past, rather than experiencing it as a current threat in your body.
What Can EMDR Help With?
While originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR is highly effective for a wide range of challenges. In my Asheville practice, I utilize EMDR to help individual clients navigate:
Single-Incident Trauma: Car accidents, natural disasters, or medical emergencies.
Complex/Developmental Trauma: Childhood abuse, emotional neglect, or long-term toxic relationships.
Anxiety & Panic: Phobias, performance anxiety, and generalized panic.
Grief and Loss: Processing the painful, complicated aftermath of a loss.
Negative Self-Beliefs: Overcoming persistent thoughts like "I'm not good enough," "I'm unsafe," or "It was my fault."
What to Expect in Our Sessions
Starting EMDR can feel intimidating, but your safety and comfort are my highest priorities. We will always move at a pace that feels manageable for your nervous system.
Preparation & Resources: Before we touch any difficult memories, we will build a toolkit of grounding techniques and coping skills. You will always be in the driver's seat.
Targeting the Memory: We will identify the specific memory, negative belief, and physical sensations you want to clear.
Desensitization (The Processing): Using bilateral stimulation, we will allow your mind to make new, healthy connections. You don't have to talk about the trauma in graphic detail for this to work.
Integration: We replace the old negative belief with a positive, empowering one (e.g., changing "I am helpless" to "I survived, and I am safe now").
